Nicolet iS10 FT-IR Spectrometer

CGL Canadian Gemlab is equipped with latest non-destructive advanced and research instruments:

  • VIS-NIR spectrophotometer (taking absorption spectra for color origin of diamonds and colored stones, country of origin)
  • Infrared FTIR spectrophotometer (taking absorption spectra for detection of impurities in synthetic diamonds and gems, typing of diamonds, identification of treated jade)
  • Photoluminescence spectrophotometer (taking absorption spectra for detection of HPHT treated diamonds and CVD synthetic diamonds)
  • Raman spectrophotometer (identification of any gems, ID of treated jade, fracture filled emeralds, inclusions)
  • Custom-made Portable Advanced Instruments (screening of colored and colorless diamonds for treatment and type IIa)

About Branko Deljanin

Branko Deljanin is a research gemmologist with extensive experience in advanced testing of gems and diamonds. A graduate of the University of Belgrade in Geology, Deljanin earned his Graduate Gemologist diploma at GIA in 1995 and worked for three years at the GIA Gem Identification department on coloured diamonds, coloured stones and pearls in New York under the direction of Bob Crowningshield and Tom Moses. In 1998, Deljanin was appointed Director of Gem Identification and Research for the EGL USA Group. From 2002 to 2009 he was Director in charge of a new EGL Canadian Division and he helped grow the new business to over $1,000,000 in annual revenue during that time.

Branko is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and served as an instructor for their FGA and DGA Programs from 2000 to 2005. Since 1999, he has spent a great deal of time on studying HPHT treatments of natural diamonds and ID of synthetic diamonds (HPHT and CVD), natural pink diamonds, and is internationally recognized as a diamond authority. In 2001 he earned his Advanced Gemology Diploma (DUG) from the University of Nantes in France, on the subject “Identification of HPHT treated diamonds”. Branko has conducted on-site research on gems and coloured diamonds in Sri Lanka, Russia, Brazil and Australia, and has managed many research projects on natural, treated and synthetic diamonds in partnership with international labs, producers and universities around the world.

Branko has been a regular contributor to trade and gemmological magazines (Rapaport, Idex, Canadian Jewellery, Canadian Business Jewellery, New York Diamonds, Jewellery News Asia, Gems and Gemology) and in addition has presented reports at a number of prestigious research conferences (European Diamond, De Beers, Canadian Gemmological, Material Research, GIA and Asian Gemological Conferences). In 2004, 2005 and 2006 Branko was a finalist for the AGA “Antonio Bonnano Award for Excellence in Gemology”. He is regularly an invited speaker at AGTA, AGA, GIA Alumni, ICA, NAJA and NCJV trade organizations.

In addition to the articles captioned below, Deljanin has co-authored books “Laboratory Grown Diamonds, Information Guide to HPHT- grown and CVD-grown diamonds” and “Identification of Diamond types and Synthetic Diamonds using CPF (Cross Polarized Filters)”. Branko is instructor of “Advanced Gemology” programs on diamonds and coloured stones currently offered in Canada, USA, Russia, Brazil, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Turkey, Hong Kong, Thailand and Australia.
